Mudrooms come in all shapes and sizes – from large expansive rooms with laundry and plenty of storage to a small nook by your entryway. Regardless of how much space you have to dedicate to a mudroom, the purpose remains the same.
The purpose of a mudroom is to provide a space to kick off your muddy and wet outerwear, clean it, and leave it to dry before putting it away.
Mudroom Essentials
- A place to hang wet coats to air dry
- A small stack of towels to quickly dry off your loveable kiddos and pets.
- Place for shoes (Shoe organizer, bench, etc.)
If you only have a small nook to create your dream mudroom, keep it simple. A closet to store your winter gear, a shoe rack, and some hooks on the outside of the closet to give those wet coats a space to air dry. If possible, switch up the flooring in the space and add a fun piece of artwork to really define your space.
Mudroom, but make it fancy
If you’ve got some space to work with, here are a few more fun and functional things to include in your mudroom.
- Shoe / Storage bench: There are so many fun ways to do this, speak to the style of your home. Having lots of storage for not only winter coats and gear, but linens and things is a great way to free up space in other parts of your home.
- Laundry: What better place to put your laundry? Drop those muddy clothes right into the washer as you enter your home!
- Counter Space: If you’re putting laundry in your mudroom, counter space is a great idea to fold and prep laundry on.
- Utility sink: Perfect for scrubbing hands, hiking shoes, and other items without making a mess in the kitchen sink.
- Kick-plate: A door kick-plate makes it super easy to achieve that “1 trip only” mindset when carrying lots of gear or groceries from the car to your home.
- Central Vacuum: That’s right, you can include a central vacuum with an extendable hose for super easy cleanup.
Remember, no matter how glamorous your mudroom is, this space is most likely a functional and frequently used entry-point of your home; you don’t want it to cause you instant stress as you walk in and see piles of laundry and dirty shoes.
