Winterize Your Home

Winterize Your Home

Preparing your home for winter when it’s already freezing outside is no fun – now is the time to winterize your home.

Heating System

Arguably the most important home feature to have in good working condition, especially in winter.

Give it a test run! Sometime in October turn the thermostat to 80 degrees (Fahrenheit), you should hear it turn on and start pumping warm air. If your furnace doesn’t seem to be working then call a qualified service technician.

Replace the air filter! It’s easy and doing so will ensure a free flow of air and a cleaner environment.

Be sure to follow your furnace’s manufacturer’s air filter recommendations.

Inspect and clean heating vents!

Check the exhaust vents! Some furnaces, boilers, and gas water heaters vent through a chimney. Make sure these vents are open and free of obstructions that can block the vent pipes and interfere with the furnace's ability to run efficiently.

Doors and Windows

With your heater in proper working order the last thing you want is cold air leaking in around doors and windows.

Inspect the moldings! Look around windows and doors for damaged or missing caulking. Use a good-quality exterior caulk to seal any gaps.

Check for air leaks! On a windy day close your doors and windows and feel around for any air leaks. A rope caulk can be used to seal any gaps.

Tracks and weather stripping! Clear tracks of debris that could interfere with the seals.

Check the weather-stripping around doors, including the door sweep attached to the bottom of the door.

Sprinklers and Your Outdoor Space

With your nicely sealed and heater system working, you can turn your attention to the yard.

Sprinklers! Don’t overlook your sprinkler system. If you have a lawn service that handles this, ask them to winterize the sprinkler system sometime in October. If you’re doing it yourself, shut off the water, drain the pipes, blow them free of water, and then open test cocks on the vacuum breaker to allow air into the system. This prevents trapped water from freezing and cracking the plastic water lines (always consult a professional!)

Your Outdoor Space! And of course, don’t forget to bring in or cover your outdoor furniture, drain your water fixtures, and care for the grass, flower beds, and other plantings.

Now it’s time to winterize your home! These are just a few key areas to focus on. Remember to get started early so everything is in good working order before the harsh winter is in full swing.
