Monthly Maintenance: Fireplace

Monthly Maintenance: Fireplace

Fall is in full swing here in Colorado, as the days get shorter and the weather gets colder we head indoors to seek the warmth from our homes and hearths. Before the complete icy chill of winter returns, now is the perfect time to make sure your fireplace is in prime condition to pump the heat all season long.

If your assessment uncovers any issues or potential problems, call in a chimney professional to assess and diagnose your problem before it gets big, expensive, and potentially dangerous.

Check for any damages – Indoors and out!

Visually examine the exterior of the chimney. Are there any cracks, loose bricks, or any signs of deterioration? If you have a factory-built metal chimney, look for corrosion, stains, or any loose sections. Is your chimney exposed in the attic? Yes? Then check there too!

Be on the hunt for any signs that could indicate repairs needed.

Cap the Chimney

Replace or install a chimney cap. A good chimney cap is your fireplace’s strongest defense against damage caused by weather and wildlife. Rain and snow can enter an uncapped chimney and freeze and thaw causing expansion damage. Small wildlife can nest in chimneys, clogging them and potentially introducing pests into your home. A chimney cap with screen mesh will keep animals out and shield your roof from embers and sparks.

Check the ceiling

Inside your home, check the area around your fireplace and chimney for any stains or dampness. This could be caused by a damaged flue liner or faulty flashing around the chimney at the roofline. If you see signs of water, call a professional right away.

Sweep the Chimney

Open the clean-out door from the base of the flue – it would be located in your basement or outside the home. Use a small mirror and flashlight to see up the flue – look for soot, cracks, holes, separation, etc.

When in doubt, call your chimney professional for a cleaning and checkup.

Chimney safety is super important and should be a priority for any homeowner. Now that your fireplace has been inspected head to toe, it’s time to throw on another log, whip up some hot cocoa, and relax for the rest of the season.
